Tymoshenko: election campaign hampers anti-crisis fight worst
The election campaign, which has actually started at the Ukrainian parliament, is the key problem for solving the crisis in the national economy, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said during her meeting with the ambassadors of Japan, Great Britain, Germany, the US, Italy, Canada, the European Commission, representatives of the embassy of France, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Presidential Secretariat concerned over terms of Russia's USD 5bn loan for Ukraine
President Viktor Yushchenko says that the talks of Ukraine's governmental delegation with Russia's representatives on extending a loan for Ukraine have been held with violation of legal regulations, press-secretary Iryna Vannykova has announced today. She explained that the President did not approve the directives for these talks and did not receive the relevant documents from the government. According to Vannykova, the Head of State considers it inadmissible when crucial issues for the country are decided behind-the-scenes.

Attempt of voting non-confidence in government turns into vote of confidence - Premier Tymoshenko
Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is making no disguise of her satisfaction with a luckless attempt of the opposition to sack her government. "I can now state that instead of no-confidence motion over the parliament we have got a vote of confidence in the government," she said commenting on today's developments in the parliament. The Prime Minister reiterated her opinion that the Party of Regions' real task wasn't aimed "at destroying the government", but destabilizing the complicated economic situation.

Parliament's another attempt to sack Tymoshenko's Cabinet failed
The Verkhovna Rada has today failed to pass non-confidence motion over Yulia Tymoshenko's government initiated by the opposition Party of Regions. Having heard and discussed the Cabinet's report on socio-economic situation in the country, the parliament did not pass the draft resolution. A total of 203 MPs voted for the decision with 226 MPs needed (Party of Regions - 172, BYuT 1, OUPSD - 10, CPU 20).

MFA refutes Russian, Romanian media reports saying Ukraine loses case in Hague on delimitation of continental shelf and exclusive economic zones in Black Sea
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers fair the verdict of the UN International Court of Justice in Hague on delimitation of the continental shelf and exclusive economic zones between Ukraine and Romania in the Black Sea, MFA Spokesman Vasyl Kyrylych told a briefing on Tuesday. According to him, this is a preliminary assessment of the Foreign Ministry. "The ruling of the UN court in Hague was carried unanimously, and therefore impartially," he stressed. Kyrylych noted that the verdict has put an end to the disputable issues between Ukraine and Romania making Ukraine closer to European integration. The MFA official also said that Ukraine was first enabled in the UN International Court of Justice in Hague.

Wide use of alternative energy to let Ukraine fully refuse from imported gas
A wide use of alternative power will allow Ukraine to completely refuse from imported Russian gas. The opinion to that effect was expressed by Ihor Cherkashyn, Chairman of the National Agency for Efficient Use of Energy Resources. According to him, the supplies of alternative and renewable energy in Ukraine make 79 million tons of fuel equivalent that equals 70 billion cu m of natural gas. At the same time, alternative energy covers only 0.83% in the fuel and energy balance of the country.

Parliament may consider government's report tomorrow
The Cabinet of Ministers is asking the Verkhovna Rada to consider at its February 3 meeting a draft resolution on the Cabinet of Ministers accountability envisaging a no-confidence motion against the government. The draft resolution was registered by the opposition Party of Regions. According to Petro Krupko, the Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers, this issue [about a no-confidence to Y. Tymoshenko's government - ed.] has been discussed in the society for a long time and must be therefore considered by the parliament as soon as possible.

Ukrainian president says authorities can protect country and people amid crisis
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has demanded that the government and the parliament immediately adopt a new draft of the state budget for 2009. He said this in a televised address to the Ukrainian nation in connection with the difficult economic situation in the country. "This is the only way to change the situation," Yushchenko said. He said that the country's financial system is now fully misbalanced and state institutions are being destroyed due to the absence of funds. "All this, as well as the government's attempts to take control of the National Bank might trigger an invisible inflation and result in a social disaster," he said.
