Tymoshenko pleased with Russian visit
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko expressed satisfaction with the results of her visit to the Russian Federation on April 29, as well as with the results of the 6th meeting of the intergovernmental committee for economic cooperation of the Ukraine - Russia Interstate Commission. She made a statement to this effect during a press conference following the visit. "All the tasks set by the government for the visit to Russia and for the committee meeting have been fulfilled, and we continue fruitful cooperation," Tymoshenko said.

Tymoshenko: Ukraine - Russia confrontation thing of the past
"It is good that cooperation is improving, and the times when certain confrontation was felt are becoming a thing of the past," Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said Wednesday, during a meeting with her Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, an UKRINFORM correspondent reported from Russia. Ukraine, Hungary pleased with political, cultural, trade, economic cooperation
During his joint press conference with Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said the parties were unanimous in their high assessment of the level of bilateral diplomatic and cultural contacts, and the growing dynamic of trade and economic cooperation. Touching on reliability of gas transit to Europe, Yushchenko emphasized that Ukraine never stood in the way of the Russian gas to the Hungarian and European markets, and will never block Hungary's way to the Russian gas.

Ukraine, Poland presidents mull Odesa-Brody-Plock pipeline project
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko had a telephone talk with his Polish counterpart Lech Kaczynski. They discussed prospects for implementation of the Odesa-Brody-Plock oil pipeline project, an UKRINFORM correspondent reported from Warsaw. The presidents expressed satisfaction with endorsement of a feasibility report on the Eurasian oil transportation corridor for the supply of Caspian oil to the European Union via Ukraine and Poland on the basis of the Odesa - Brody pipeline.

Business activity looking up in Ukraine, President Yushchenko says
President Viktor Yushchenko said that Ukraine has a positive dynamics for revival of business activity, he told in an interview with The Economist. However, according to Yushchenko, the government has now to do all the best to restore Ukraine's cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The President noted that cooperation with the IMF, the World Bank, European banks 'is alpha and omega of what we call a Ukrainian stabilization plan'.

Ukraine's industrial output up 8.3% in March, says premier
Ukraine's industrial production grew by 8.3% in March 2009 compared to February 2009, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said at a government meeting on Wednesday. "There are stable figures indicating the recovery of the economy. Industrial production grew by 8.3% in March compared to February. This figure is very important for us to see where the economy and the crisis are moving, and whether the economy continues falling, or starts recovering and developing," she said, adding that industrial production grew by 5.4% in February compared to January this year.

Cabinet passes resolution instead of anti-crisis bills rejected by parliament
The Ukrainian government has managed to find necessary mechanisms to adopt resolutions in order to balance the budgets of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine and the Pension Fund. Accordingly, these issues no longer need legal regulation, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has told a briefing on Friday evening after the Cabinet's extraordinary meeting. Y. Tymoshenko stressed that the government is not going to submit similar draft laws in the parliament any more in view of today's refusal of the Verkhovna Rada to consider and vote for the instruments.

BYuT blames President for anti-state position
The Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko (BYuT) has blamed directly President Viktor Yushchenko for today's failure of the parliament to vote for a bailout package and accused him of taking 'an anti-state and anti-Ukrainian position'. In its statement, the BYuT faction notes that these documents had been coordinated by world finance organizations and should support Ukraine in combating the crisis. "However, Viktor Yushchenko ordered a part of MPs that he personally controls not to vote for this package," the statement reads.

Premier planning to work for a long time
"Contrary to all of the political nuances and political reshuffle, the government is working and will continue to work for a long time," Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said at a council on the development of the Ukrainian farm sector on Thursday. This statement became a peculiar answer to yesterday's statement by President Viktor Yushchenko that the coalition, after it was created, failed to form the government and appoint prime minister in the terms foreseen by the Constitution of Ukraine.

President says his constitutional amendments aimed at creating European-style bicameral parliament in Ukraine
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko expressed his position on the need to amend the Constitution of Ukraine at a meeting with the students and teachers of higher educational establishments in Odesa on Tuesday. The head of state has already tabled his bill of constitutional amendments to parliament. Yushchenko said that the issue concerns the creation of a European-style two-chamber parliament in the country - the National Assembly of Ukraine.

President calls Southern, Northern gas flow projects political
Speaking in interview with Russia's Echo of Moscow radio, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko called as inadequate the sharp reaction of the Russian leadership to the Ukraine - European Union declaration on the gas transportation system modernization. Yushchenko reminded that, according to Ukrainian laws, Ukraine's gas transportation system may be only state-owned. "Why does not this fact please Russia as the natural gas producer? We clearly say that this is our home affair, that the status of this system does not change, and we are not out to revise it today," an UKRINFORM correspondent in the Russian Federation quoted the President as saying.

Verkhovna Rada calls presidential elections for October 25, 2009
The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, has scheduled regular presidential elections for October 25, 2009. A total of 401 MPs out of the 442 registered in the parliament's session hall backed a respective bill on Wednesday. They included 174 MPs from the Regions Party, 155 MPs from the Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko, 26 MPs from the Our Ukraine - People's Self-Defense Bloc, 27 MPs from the Communist Party, and 19 MPs from the Bloc of Lytvyn. According to the Constitution of Ukraine and the law on the election of the Ukrainian president, the parliament decided to set the presidential elections for Sunday, October 25, 2009. The resolution takes effect on the day of its publication.
