Ulianchenko appointed head of Presidential Secretariat
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has appointed Kyiv Regional Governor Vira Ulianchenko as the head of his secretariat. On May 16, 2009, she was elected the head of the council of the pro-presidential Our Ukraine People's Union party. In 2000-2001, Ulianchenko served as an assistant to then Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yushchenko. In 2002-2005, she headed the secretariat of the Our Ukraine faction of deputies in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament.

Crisis will worsen without amendment of budget - Yushchenko
Speaking in an interview with newspaper Delo, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko called as utopian the macroeconomic indicators the government planned for 2010. In his opinion, a GDP rise of 0.4% and inflation of 9.5% predicted by the government are unrealistic. The President reminded that the Ukrainian industry fell by 32% and construction by 57% during the quarter.

Local border traffic agreement between Ukraine and Poland to take effect in late May - early June - Ukraine's foreign Ministry
There are all legal grounds to say that an agreement on local border traffic between Ukraine and Poland will take effect in late May or early June 2009, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Vasyl Kyrylych said at a briefing on Monday. He said that this document has yet to be signed by the Polish president. After that, Kyrylych said, Poland will send a note to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry informing it about the approval of all domestic procedures.

Business banks reproach NBU of artificially strengthening hryvnia
Business banks are reproaching the National Bank of Ukraine of artificially strengthening the hryvnia. Thus, they say, the offer of currency did not increase, just the ask for it essentially reduced for certain reasons. First, banks have no hryvnias at all. That is why they have nothing to buy currency at, either cash or noncash. Second, the rush demand for currency among population reduced.

UEFA decision on EURO 2012 venue cities optimal, Ukraine says
The Ukrainian government was pleased with the decision that the UEFA passed concerning the local cities that would co-host UEFA EURO 2012, Deputy Prime Minister Ivan Vasiunyk told a press conference at UKRINFORM Thursday. "The UEFA decision confirmed the powerful consolidating potential, which is so important to the Ukrainian society. The matches will be staged in the capital city, two big industrial centers, and a cultural center. This list is actually an axis of consolidation of Ukraine," he said.

Kyiv, Lviv, Donetsk, Kharkiv to host UEFA EURO 2012 matches
The UEFA Executive Committee approved in Bucharest on Wednesday a final list of Ukrainian and Polish cities that will host matches of the UEFA EURO 2012 European Football Championship. UEFA President Michel Platini announced this decision on Wednesday morning. UEFA took the final decision under a parity principle, with four Ukrainian and four Polish host cities. Kyiv, Lviv, Donetsk, and Kharkiv will represent Ukraine.

Speaker accuses opposition of 'another attempt' to seek parliament's dissolution
Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn has accused the Regions Party of its "another attempt" to seek the dissolution of the Verkhovna Rada. "Another scenario for blocking the Verkhovna Rada's work is being implemented. There are no grounds for the Verkhovna Rada's dissolution in accordance with a ruling by the Constitutional Court," he said. "But these grounds could appear if the parliament does not work in a plenary regime for 30 days. This date falls on May 17, Lytvyn said. "

Yushchenko hails Eastern Partnership initiative as pledge of mutual trust and security
"I am glad that the Eastern Partnership initiative suggested by Poland and Sweden, which are devoted supporters of Europe's full-scale unification, is becoming a reality. I see the current event as one of the greatest victories of the European idea," Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said on May 7 in Prague, where he took part in the statutory summit of the European Union's Eastern Partnership initiative.

Ukraine, Belarus to formalize agreements reached in Gomel by end of May
"Ukraine and Belarus don't have any serious problems in mutual relations between their nations and we should praise this historical entity," Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said after a meeting with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko in Gomel on Wednesday. Yushchenko said that he had agreed with Lukashenko that a meeting between the Ukrainian and Belarusian prime ministers would soon be organized in Ukraine.

President demands putting Odesa - Brody on direct flow
"I am demanding from the government immediate transfer of Odesa - Brody to the designed work mode, i.e. the direct flow," Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko told a meeting at his Secretariat. The President emphasized that Odesa - Brody had not been put on direct operation terms for political reasons, and voiced hope that the government would "have enough bravery and wisdom for passing the relevant decision."
