President Yushchenko sees political context in deformation of relations between Ukraine, Russia in gas sphere
In an interview to the Russian Nezavisimaya Gazeta President Viktor Yushchenko noted that a reason for deformation of relations between Ukraine and Russia in the gas sphere had a political context. In Yushchenko's conviction, differences existing between Ukraine and Russia in the policy, in determining tactical tasks and strategic aims, in interpretation of historical events and even in the system of values, demand finding "points of contacts", since it is necessary for the countries "to develop cooperation, build normal civilized relations with neighbors".

President notes positive changes in state border protection
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has said that each border crossing point should serve as a real "business card" of Ukraine and reflect the country's being part of Europe. He said that during his visit to the Shehyni border service agency in Lviv region that this task "becomes especially important during [Ukraine's] preparations for hosting UEFA EURO 2012."

Speaker: referendum will split Ukraine
"I would not advise or recommend launching the procedure of referendums, especially at the current uneasy period," he told the press commenting President Viktor Yushchenko's Wednesday statement that he might call a referendum on amendments to the Constitution. The Speaker noted that "the move will immediately provoke the question of a referendum on accession to NATO, for which all resolutions are available."

Government suggests economizing on insurance, rehabilitation of Rada deputies
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine proposes that Verkhovna Rada (parliament) abolish free insurance of life and health of people's deputies, as well as their invigoration at the cost of the state, Labor and Social Policy Minister Liudmyla Denisova told a government meeting. She said the government had approved appropriate amendments to the law on the status of a people's deputy.

State Customs Service to simplify cargo registration
Ukrainian State Customs Service Head Anatoliy Makarenko has said that orders are being drafted regarding the introduction of a "green corridor" - a maximally simplified regime of customs control and cargo registration for responsible exporters and resident importers. He said that customs officers would examine cargo passing through the green corridor only in exceptional cases - if customs rules are violated.

Ukraine eurobond prices growing despite negative sentiments on global markets - Concorde Capital
Ukrainian eurobond prices were growing last week despite negative sentiments on the global financial markets, Concorde Capital analysts say. One of the main events contributing to the worsening of expectations on the global markets was the decision of the S&P agency to downgrade Great Britain rating outlooks from stable to negative. Markets were also disappointed with information about the number of appeals for unemployment benefits in the United States, which appeared to be worse than predicted.

Hryvnia starts cheapening again
During the past four days, the US dollar got almost UAH 0.11 more expensive in Ukraine. If at the beginning of the week the average purchase rate of the US currency at Kyiv-based banks made UAH 7.49 / USD 1, on May 21 financial institutions were buying the dollar at UAH 7.60. The average sale rate over the period under review grew by UAH 0.06 to UAH 7.68 / USD 1, the Delo portal reported.

Judges, public prosecutors, investigators may have life terms for bribery
Since this time on, judges, public prosecutors and investigators exposed as bribe takers on an especially large scale may be condemned to imprisonment for the term of life with confiscation of their property for taking a bribe exceeding the exemption limit by four thousand and more fold (from UAH 68 thousand). This punishment is provided by amendments to the legislation on bribery prevention adopted by the Parliament today.

UEFA Cup final to be broadcast in 63 countries
The participants and organizers of the UEFA Cup final between Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) and Werder Bremen (Germany) held a council a few hours before Spanish Referee Luis Medina Cantalejo starts the match in Istanbul. According to the official Web site of the football club from Donetsk, Shakhtar will be dressed in their traditional, orange and black kit, while their opponents will put on a white and green kit.
