Premier says Ukraine will get third tranche from IMF by end of this week

Ukraine will receive the third tranche under the Stand-By Arrangement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) by the end of this week, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said while opening the government meeting on Wednesday. According to IMF First Deputy Managing Director and Acting Chair John Lipsky, Ukraine's further cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under the Stand-By Arrangement will help the country create the conditions that facilitate an expeditious economic recovery, he said while commenting on the IMF's decision to release USD 3.3 billion as the next tranche to Ukraine, the fund's press service reported.

Ukraine proves being net exporter of foods

In keeping with the preliminary results of the 2009/2010 harvesting campaign, Ukraine grew about 44 million tons of grain crops, including 41.6 million tons of the key crops (wheat, corn and barley), the Agriculture resource reported. According to the UN classification, the report says, this country is believed to be a net exporter of food, growing over a ton of grain and oil-bearing crops per capita.

President Yushchenko meets Patriarch Kirill

President Viktor Yushchenko has met Patriarch of Moscow and All-Russia Kirill Monday. The meeting took place at the president's official house, Horodetsky House, the presidential press-service reported. Ukraine, in Yushchenko's words, is expecting a lot of positive signals the orthodoxy needs from the visit of Patriarch Kirill. He also voiced hopes for continuation of a dialogue on the prospects of orthodoxy development in Ukraine the Ukrainian party appreciates.

Parliament amends presidential election law

The Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine has passed on the whole the bill of amendments to some legal acts on presidential elections. The bill, particularly, amends the procedure for forming district and precinct electoral commissions, reduces the election campaign period from 120 to 90 days, and eliminates the institute of absentee certificates and subscription lists in support of a presidential candidate.

US confirms security guarantees given to Ukraine in 1994

US Vice President Joe Biden has confirmed the security guarantees that the United States, Russia and Great Britain gave to Ukraine within the framework of the Budapest memorandum in 1994. He made a statement to this effect, addressing Ukrainian and American businessmen at the end of his working visit to Ukraine. In this context Biden noted that the US interest in Ukraine is confirmed by the program of assistance, in whose frames USD 120 million is provided to support peace and security, upgrade the Armed Forces, reinforce the Shelter facility, combat AIDS, and for other health programs.

The relations between Ukraine and the United States are forming as those of strategic importance, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said during his joint press conference with US Vice President Joe Biden in Kyiv Tuesday, an UKRINFORM correspondent reported. In Yushchenko's words, the Ukraine - US relations are developing rather actively, and are based on a solid legal ground, including the Strategic Partnership Charter of December 2008, the bilateral action plan and the road-map signed in early 2008.
