Ukrainian premier notes certain economic stability in Ukraine

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has said that the peak of the global financial crisis has passed. She was speaking at a meeting with representatives of the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations in Kyiv on Monday, the government's press service reported. Government to spend $1.9 b of IMF's third tranche on repayment of foreign debt

The Ukrainian government will spend USD 1.9 billion of a USD 3.3 billion tranche of the International Monetary Fund's loan to the country to repay its foreign debt, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said at a press conference in Kyiv on Friday. "The tranche will be USD 3.3 billion. Of this money, exactly USD 1.9 billion will be sent to make payments on the next foreign debts according to schedule that completely removes all risks related to payments [on foreign debts]," she said.

Yushchenko says amendments to presidential election law a threat to democracy

President Viktor Yushchenko notes that the amendments to the law on presidential elections with the present wording are dangerous for democracy and transparent elections of the head of state. "The bill in this context is dangerous for democracy in Ukraine. To my mind, it throws us back for 3-4 years and makes a system of electing president more closed," Viktor Yushchenko said this in Rivne (West Ukraine).

Tymoshenko confirms entry in NATO will be decided at national referendum

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, a presidential candidate with a highest rating, confirmed once again at a news briefing Wednesday that the question of Ukraine's entry in NATO must be decided at a nation-wide referendum. "I want to stress once again that both I personally and my political team may talk about entering NATO exclusively by way of an all-Ukraine referendum," she stresses. Tymoshenko noted that at its meeting on Wednesday, the government adopted "the parameters of cooperation" with NATO, but no word was said about Ukraine's entry in the alliance.

President calling on to intensify Chornobyl recovery efforts

President Viktor Yushchenko notes a paramount importance of the work on Chornobyl recovery efforts, an unprecedented nuclear catastrophe that occurred 23 years ago. "Chornobyl remains one of the most acute problems of Ukraine inherited from the Soviet Union times," Yushchenko has today addressed a meeting of the Assembly of Donors of the Chornobyl Shelter Fund and Nuclear Safety Account in Kyiv. According to the Head of State, Ukraine annually earmarks UAH 1 billion from the state budget for the disaster recovery, which is more than health care spending.

Europe should help Ukraine depoliticize gas issue, says Yushchenko

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has said that Europe should help Ukraine depoliticize the problem of the Ukrainian gas transportation system. The head of state made the comment in an interview with the Austrian newspaper Die Presse published on his official Web site. "The problem of Ukraine's gas transportation system has a political, rather than technical nature, and it should be depoliticized with the assistance of Europe, because the gas transportation system is a problem not only for Ukraine. It's very important that Europe learns to speak with one voice in the question of organizing the gas market," Yushchenko said.

EU hopes for fast solution to gas problem

The European Union is hoping for a rapid decision to provide Ukraine with necessary funds to pay for the supply of the Russian gas, but it is at the same time in permanent contacts with both parties and does not rule out the worst scenario, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has today told a news conference in Brussels ahead of the G8 summit in L'Aquila, Italy, UKRINFORM's own correspondent reports.

Yushchenko says Ukraine's territory will never be used against Russia

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has said that he will order law enforcement agencies to analyze whether all of the Russian humanitarian and educational projects in Sevastopol are in line with Ukrainian laws. He said at a press conference in Sevastopol on Sunday that a number of those projects were "unfriendly," as, in his opinion, they bring "instability and discord." "If these projects contradict Ukrainian laws, they shouldn't exist," Yushchenko said.

President Viktor Yushchenko again insists on revising the state budget 2009, he said this in Simferopol at a meeting on Crimea's development. "Surely, we have to start reviewing the budget. With this budget we cannot give a normal respond to the market developments," the Head of State noted. Territorial integrity vital both to Ukraine and China - Tymoshenko

To Ukraine, as well as to China, the issue of territorial integrity is vitally important, because Ukraine still has some demarcation problems, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said during her meeting with the Chinese delegation led by Wang Gang, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. "To us, as well as to China, the issue of territorial integrity is of a particular importance. And I want to assure once again that our position on the Taiwan issue is invariable and distinct," Yulia Tymoshenko emphasized.

Ukraine to reduce presidential election campaign

The Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine has passed as a basis the bill on amendments to some Ukrainian laws on election of the president, particularly, reduction of the presidential election campaign from 120 to 90 days. A total of 367 MPs voted in favor of this law. Beside that, the decision was backed to cut the procedure of preparing the bill for second reading.
