Europe should help Ukraine depoliticize gas issue, says Yushchenko

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has said that Europe should help Ukraine depoliticize the problem of the Ukrainian gas transportation system.
The head of state made the comment in an interview with the Austrian newspaper Die Presse published on his official Web site.
"The problem of Ukraine's gas transportation system has a political, rather than technical nature, and it should be depoliticized with the assistance of Europe, because the gas transportation system is a problem not only for Ukraine. It's very important that Europe learns to speak with one voice in the question of organizing the gas market," Yushchenko said.
He also commented on ways to avert a gas crisis of January 2009 that resulted in the halt in gas supplies to Europe. "The agreement with Moscow that put an end to the halt in gas supplies humiliates Ukraine and is not based on market-oriented principles. Consequently, instability was predicted. Of course, they will again reap a political benefit from this subject, and they will try to describe Ukraine as a unreliable transit country," Yushchenko said.
