Judges, public prosecutors, investigators may have life terms for bribery

Since this time on, judges, public prosecutors and investigators exposed as bribe takers on an especially large scale may be condemned to imprisonment for the term of life with confiscation of their property for taking a bribe exceeding the exemption limit by four thousand and more fold (from UAH 68 thousand).

This punishment is provided by amendments to the legislation on bribery prevention adopted by the Parliament today.

Amendments to the Criminal Code expand the list of circumstances that overburden punishment. In particular, this list includes "committing of crimes by a person due to fulfillment of official duties" and "commitment of a crime due to selfish ends".

Functionaries caught on bribery in a particularly large scale are threatened with punishment in the form of imprisonment from 12 to 15 years.

Amendments to the Law "On Applying Amnesty in Ukraine" exclude amnesty for persons convicted for briberies of an especially large scale.
