A wide use of alternative power will allow Ukraine to completely refuse from imported Russian gas. The opinion to that effect was expressed by Ihor Cherkashyn, Chairman of the National Agency for Efficient Use of Energy Resources.

According to him, the supplies of alternative and renewable energy in Ukraine make 79 million tons of fuel equivalent that equals 70 billion cu m of natural gas.

At the same time, alternative energy covers only 0.83% in the fuel and energy balance of the country.

Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko had earlier said that Ukraine may replace half of the gas consumed by alternative fuel. According to her, plant growing wastes may compensate the gas use at the extent of more than 16 billion cu m. The use of wood, in particular, from sanitary felling may save around 2 billion cu m of gas annually. Along with the use of biogas, replacement of natural gas will total some 20 billion cu m of gas.
