Ukrainian president thanks European Parliament for resolution on Famine
|
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko thanked the European Parliament for passing on October 23 a resolution recognizing the Famine of 1932-1933 as an appalling crime against the Ukrainian people and against humanity.
In a letter to President of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Pottering, Yushchenko said that Ukraine had long waited for the recognition of the Famine of 1932-1933 as a crime against the people and against humanity.
According to various estimates, an artificial famine, or the Holodomor, which was organized by the communist regime, killed some seven to ten million Ukrainian citizens (25% of the country's population), including around four million children, due to the confiscation of food in the early 1930s.
