Government to sue communist rule for masterminding Holodomor
|
Deputy Prime Minister Ivan Vasiunyk for the first time disclosed on Thursday the government's plans to initiate legal proceedings on the crimes of the communist rule according to the criteria sealed in the UN Convention of December 9, 1948 on prevention of genocide and relevant punishment.
He announced this during the international scientific conference in Kyiv on the Holodomor of 1932 - 1933 in Ukraine, its reasons, demographic results and legal assessment. According to the vice premier, the process will be based on scientific and investigation findings about Holodomor that were collected by the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, research and archive institutions in the course of several years.
Vasiunyk reminded that Item 'c' Article 2 of the Convention determines genocide as purposeful creation for a certain group of people of the living conditions that would fully or partially destroy it physically. On November 28, 2006, the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine passed the law on Holodomor, calling it the genocide of Ukrainian nation.
According to the vice premier, there are quite a lot of scientific studies into the subject, but work must continue until all details of the crime are uncovered, as well as the names of those who planned it, and the results of Holodomor for Ukrainian people.
