President Viktor Yushchenko, currently on a visit to New York, said the main lesson of the Russia-Georgia conflict is the necessity to create "a security counterbalance" system in the Black Sea region, UKRINFORM correspondent in the US reported.
When delivering his speech to representatives of the National Geographic Society and Foreign Relations Council, Viktor Yushchenko expressed confidence that efforts of the international community should be directed to the very creation of such a balance, which would prevent such incidents in the future.
The destabilization that someone tried to bring in Ukraine against the background of the Russia-Georgia conflict was aimed at undermining democratic processes and calling in to question Eurointegrational directions of the country's development, the President stressed. "According to the authors' plan, the scenario could be realized through pre-term parliamentary and presidential elections that would help forces with other visions on foreign and domestic policy enter the office," he said.
Viktor Yushchenko underscored that the Russia-Georgia conflict is not a problem of particularly regional level. "A security zone, a peace zone should move further eastward from the European Union boundaries," the Ukrainian President summarized.
