Ruling coalition dies away, Speaker announces

The ruling coalition of BYuT and Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense no longer exists, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Arseniy Yatsenuik told a plenary session.

"I officially inform of liquidation (activity - ed.) of the coalition of democratic forces in the Verkhovna Rada created November 29, 2007," Yatsenuik said.

On September 2, following adoption in the parliament by the BYuT faction (a coalition member), the opposition Party of Regions and the Communist Party of several laws distributing the presidential and governmental powers, the pro-presidential faction Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense withdrew from the ruling coalition.

In accordance with the Constitution, a 30-day count begins for creation of the new coalition. Otherwise, the President may dissolve the parliament and call pre-term elections.
