President Viktor Yushchenko addressed a telegram to Prime Minister Yuliya Tymoshenko asking to take measures to ensure continuous delivery of import natural gas to Ukraine, the President's press-service reported.

The Government has to analyze the situation and take comprehensive reaction steps in light of the recent statement by Gazprom intending to suspend gas delivery to Ukraine from February 11, the telegram says.

Premier Yuliya Tymoshenko is to personally report to the President on the relevant issue.

Earlier, President Viktor Yushchenko stated the Gazprom's ultimatum was a respond on the Government's claims to remove the intermediary UkrGazEnergo from the market and review tariffs on gas transmission via Ukraine.

As UKRINFORM early reported, Gazprom announced plans to suspend gas supply to Ukraine on February 11. This was disclosed by Gazprom's official representative Sergey Kupriyanov on February 7.

According to him, Gazprom will be forced to apply such measures, as Ukraine has gas debt of USD 1.5 billion. To resume gas supply we demand from Ukraine to pay off the debt and sign the relevant protocols and agreements, he said. In case the problem is not adjusted within several days, Ukraine will be cut on gas. Kupriyanov also noted that the gas debt of Ukraine in 2008 is USD 500 million, while the general debt has reached USD 1.5 billion.
