
Japan sends money for greenhouse gas emissions
KYIV, July 30 / UKRINFORM/. Japan has transferred to Ukraine a second tranche under the contract for the sale of 30 million assigned amount units of greenhouse gas emissions, signed in March 2009, chairman of the National Environmental Investment Agency of Ukraine Serhiy Orlenko has said.
In his words, the funds came for selling 15 million units of emissions.
The agency chief noted that the funds will be directed towards a number of energy saving and energy efficiency projects in social sphere. In particular, in 2010-2011 it is planned to implement 550 such projects in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Sumy, Ivano-Frankivsk and Luhansk regions.
Orlenko declined to specify the amount of the Japanese tranche, citing the confidentiality of the existing arrangements.
In 2009, when sending the first tranche for the same amount of emission units (15 million units), according to former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, Ukraine was to receive about USD 4.5 billion (1 USD - 7.9 UAH).
In 2009 Ukraine and Japan agreed to sell 30 million of assigned amount units of greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol.
Ukraine ratified the Kyoto Protocol on 4 February 2004. According to the instrument, for each country the maximum allowable limit of greenhouse gas emissions is set.
