Health ministry confirms 65 pig flu cases


KYIV, November 9 /UKRINFORM/. Laboratory tests have confirmed 65 cases of А/H1N1 flu, which caused the death of 14 people, Mykhailo Holubchykov, head of the health ministry's medical statistics center, told a news briefing on Monday.

He also said flu and pneumonia killed 4,020 in nine months of 2006, 4,720 in 2007, 4,972 in 2008 and 3,822 this year.

In his turn, First Deputy Health Minister Vasyl Lazoryshynets said a total of 969,247 people contracted acute respiratory virus infections and flu in Ukraine during the first nine months. In the past two days, the number of flue cases "essentially reduced." Particularly, if earlier over 100,000 people a day fell ill, on Saturday there were 50,000, and on Sunday 32,000 registered cases.

At the same time, the situation is still serious with the patients undergoing stationary treatment. Particularly, there are 48,972 patients at hospitals, including 466 at intensive care and reanimation departments, and 45-50 people need artificial ventilation every day.
